The Youth Mobility Scheme Visa is for young adults from certain countries to live and work in the UK for 2 years. This is one of the main sub-routes for the T5 (Temporary Worker) route.

ELIGIBILITY

You can apply for a Youth Mobility Scheme visa (T5) if you’re aged 18 to 30 and want to live and work or study in the United Kingdom, as long as you are a citizen of a qualifying country.

You can apply if you are from one of the following countries:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • Monaco
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of Korea
  • San Marino
  • Taiwan

There are quotas on the number of places available for applicants from these countries.

You can also apply if you are a:

  • British overseas citizen.
  • British overseas territories citizen.
  • British national (overseas).

LENGTH OF STAY

The Youth Mobility Scheme Visa allows you to work and live in the UK for 2 years.

During this period you are free to enter and leave the UK at any time. You cannot extend your stay.

If you turn 31 while you’re in the UK, you can still stay for as long as your visa is valid.

Financial requirements

You must have at least £2,530 in your bank account to show you can support yourself in the UK. 

You will be required to show proof that you had the funds available for at least 28 days in a row. Day 28 must be within 31 days of applying for this visa.

RESTRICTIONS

  • You cannot apply if you have already been in the UK under the scheme.
  • You cannot apply if you have children under 18 who live with you, or are financially dependent on you.
  • You cannot work as a professional sportsperson.
  • You cannot access public funds.

Youth Mobility Scheme

You must apply online before you travel to the UK. The earliest you can apply is 3 months before you travel to the UK. As part of your online application, you need to book an appointment at a visa application centre. You will have your biometrics (fingerprints and photograph) taken at your appointment.

Once you have applied online, proved your identity and provided your documents, you will usually get a decision on your visa within 4-8 weeks.

The timelines may currently be longer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Priority Service may be available as an additional purchasing option in some locations for applications made outside the UK.

No, but you may be able to switch to another visa category such as the Skilled Worker Route or Start-up Route, or a spouse or dependent visa, depending on your family relationships. You may need to leave the UK and apply for a new visa in your home country.
