Life in the UK Test

The life in the UK test is a computer-based test that is mandatory for anyone seeking Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK or naturalisation
as a British citizen.

The Life in the UK Test is intended to demonstrate that an individual has sufficient knowledge of British life and customs, political system and proficiency in the English language. Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), or permanent residency, is an immigration status granted to non-British citizens enabling them to settle in the United Kingdom. Naturalisation is the legal process by which a person’s nationality is changed. Passing a Life in the UK Test is mandatory for this process.

This test comprises 24 multiple choice questions that are to be completed within 45 minutes.

You must remember to book your test at least three days in advance from the date that you want to take it. You can do this only on the official government website. There are over 30 test centers located across the UK and you will be allowed to choose a test center closest to you.

Similarly, if you wish to cancel your booking, you must do so three days before the test date in order to be eligible for a refund.
