Sponsor Licence 1

The Sponsorship Pre-Licence Process usually takes 8 weeks to process an application for the Sponsor Register. However, as of 21 June 2023, there is a priority service that completes the process in 10 working days.

To use this service to get an application included on the Sponsor Register faster, a fee of £500 must be paid. There is a limit of 30 applications per day. It should be noted that this service does not necessarily guarantee your application will be accepted.

What is a Sponsor Licence?

A Sponsor Licence is required if you wish to employ someone who is from outside the UK. This also applies to unpaid work such as running or volunteering for a charity.

This does not apply if you want to employ Irish citizens, people with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or those who have been given indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

The licence lasts for 4 years. If you do not meet your responsibilities as a sponsor, you may lose your licence. Responsibilities include checking your sponsored workers have the necessary skills and qualifications.

The Home Office has an overview of the UK sponsorship process for employers in the UK, which includes a full list of responsibilities for employers. This can be found at gov.uk.
